How to Lead Smart People: Leadership for Professionals - Arun Singh & Mike Mister
In many jobs people work their way up through a hierarchy, an experience that prepares them for managing a team. In some professions, such as law, finance, accountancy, academia, engineering, education and healthcare, individuals may find themselves managing a team of equals. This book uses 50 simple lessons to show the reader in concise, pithy prose how to manage a team of equals with intelligence and diplomacy.
Each lesson features a short introduction and example from the authors' experience, showing you how skills can be acquired. These are then followed by 6-10 action points to implement immediately. Core leadership skills are reevaluated for the leader of a smart team.
The book teaches you core skills such as decision making and delegating, but also soft skills such as delivering good and bad news to team members and how to realise more general aims such as building trust and growing your team. The authors also offer advice on how to look after yourself as a team leader, how to build resilience in tough situations, but also how to develop creativity and extend your skill base so that you are constantly learning.
Must-win Battles
Must-Win Battles shows in a step-by-step way, how to identify the key goals that need achieving and how to win emotional and intellectual buy-in from the employees who make it all happen. By focusing on the right key short-term efforts you attain the twin benefits of delivering in the here-and-now, and making progress toward larger strategic goals. Businesses around the world are struggling for growth and profitability in today's fast-changing world. Those that achieve standout success are characterized by clear vision, focused execution, and commitment by people to doing what counts. But for the 99% of businesses that lack many of these attributes, how do they go about getting them? Should they turn to another management fad? Probably not. Senior managers are now sceptical in the face of "initiative overload". Instead they are looking for inspiration among real-world companies and real leaders. Based on a successful executive programme at IMD, one of the world's foremost executive education institutions and has been tested at some of the world's best-known companies, with intimate and compelling case studies running throughout, Must Win-Battles offers the inspiration and advice that many are looking for. "Enlightening and thought provoking in an era of cluttered agendas. Must Win Battles sets a clear path for leaders to focus their team's head, heart, and hands. Michael D. White, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, PepsiCo International New York "Moving a company to the next level requires confronting the right challenges, and Peter Killing, Thomas Malnight, and Tracey Keys show how to pick your battles and then how to win them. Their Must-Win Battles provides a practical playbook for unleashing and aligning the intellectual and emotional energies essential for any business triumph." Michael Useem, Director-Center for Leadership and Change Management, The Wharton School and author of The Leadership Moment "In " Must Win Battles " Peter Killing and Thomas Malnight have distilled their richly varied experiences drawn from many organizations over many years. Together they have created a practical handbook for all managers who are interested in re-energizing and improving their business performance. Must Win Battles is easy to read and brimful with practical advise; well worth a few hours of your time". Iain Ferguson CBE , Chief Executive , Tate & Lyle PLC. Named European Businessman of the Year by Forbes Magazine, 2005 "Working with must-win battles has fundamentally changed our approach to where we seek growth in the market and the way we engage our people in realizing these goals. Must-win battles are the glue that ties the business together globally, that everyone understands and can contribute to. The process clarifies for everyone the long-term vision and business direction, where to allocate resources and why it is important to get aligned." Diego Bevilacqua, President, Global Business: Foodsolutions, Unilever "Every executive knows that there are certain battles that must be won for the business tobe successful. This great new book provides a real-world, step-by-step approach to choosing the right battles in a way that helps unleash the organizational will to achieve them. A BMW in a Costco parking lot? A working class family with a 50-inch plasma TV? What's going on in the mind of the new consumer?
Today's consumers can seem impossible to understand, and even harder to please. For instance, the average mall shopper will spend about $100, then leave when she hits that limit. She'll probably buy shoes rather than clothing, because she doesn't want to think about her dress size. And the store most likely to get her money isn't the one with the nicest display or the deepest discounts-it's the one closest to her parking spot.
In his consulting with dozens of leading companies, Michael J. Silverstein has interviewed thousands of customers, extracting fascinating patterns about what really drives their purchase decisions. His first book, the acclaimed bestseller Trading Up, has taught a generation of marketers about the "new luxury" phenomenon, and why consumers will happily pay a steep premium for goods and services that are emotionally satisfying, from golf clubs to bathroom fixtures to beauty products.
But Trading Up revealed only part of the story of the new consumer. The same middle-class people who are happily trading up at Victoria's Secret and Panera are going on treasure hunts at Costco and Home Depot. And they are often getting as much emotional satisfaction in the discount stores as in the luxury stores. TREASURE HUNT shows how even the most mundane shopping-for things like paper towels and pet food-has become an adventure rather than a tedious chore.
In just about every category, both the high end and the low end are growing and innovation- rich. Many middle-class consumers gladly spend $5 a day for a Starbucks venti latte; others spend forty cents a day on home-brewed coffee, feel good about their frugality, and save up the difference to buy Apple's newest Nano. TREASURE HUNT explains the success of companies as diverse as Dollar General, H. E. Butt, eBay, Commerce Bank, and Tchibo.
But beware: in our bifurcated global market, businesses need a clear strategy for aiming high or low, while avoiding the treacherous middle, where so many have recently stumbled. If your offering isn't exciting enough to inspire trading up, but not enough of a bargain to satisfy the treasure hunters, you'll have no emotional connection with your target audience. And then, as many fallen companies have discovered, your tried-and-true marketing strategies will go into a severe stall.
TREASURE HUNT takes us into the homes of real people making real decisions, and into the CEO's offices of innovative companies finding new ways to accommodate them. Written with the same flair, empathy, and intelligence that made Trading Up an instant classic, this is an essential guide to the moods and habits of the constantly changing consumer.

The Great Transformation
his is a much-praised critique of capitalism in historical perspective. While the ideas can be extremely interesting, it is very difficult to follow and requires great effort. Nonetheless, I think that most of the arguments are sound, even though the predictions at the end of the book - of the imminent demise of market capitalism - proved premature. The book has four basic ideas. First, capitalism - based on free markets in land, labor, and money for individuals seeking personal profit - does not reflect "human nature" but in fact goes against it in historical terms. I.e. human communities traditionally had a more communal survival strategy, sharing resources when the need arose in exchange for the right to claim reciprocal benefits for themselves when circumstances change. It was the basis of society.Second, free-market capitalism is a utopian, quasi-religious construct that paradoxically required extensive government support to impose on a largely unwilling society. In the process, it destroys traditional society and all its built-in safety mechanisms and rights. Indeed, Polanyi argues, free-market capitalism is contrary to democratic political systems.Third, except for brief periods, it doesn't work. Not only does it impose intolerable burdens on the under-privileged, but governments regularly must intervene to remedy these deficiencies on both an individual level and during regular systemic breakdowns. This flatly contradicts the claims that government can only mess things up.Fourth, the breakdown of the market in the 1920s led directly to fascism, which (like communism) was designed as a nationalist alternative to capitalism. Rather than a self-correcting system that automatically leads to optimal outcomes, it leads to mass unemployment, disenfranchisement and any number of social maladies that are impossible to measure in any social scientific sense.Where the book gets difficult is in the many historical proofs that Polanyi presents to prove his points. The principal proof is that the gold standard wreaked havoc on the economies that adopted it, forcing brutal internal adjustments that were destructive and ultimately self-defeating. The argument gets so technical and is expressed with such convoluted style and organization that it is an awful, often dull struggle to read. Government, he concludes, was key to creating and constructing the market mechanism as it exists, which implies that it can be done in a very different way from what we have.In spite of my criticisms, I am glad I read this book and recommend it. Polanyi makes a cogent argument that capitalism is bound to eventually fail and highlights how ridiculously fanciful many of the claims by classical ecnomists (and now by neo-liberals) are. While the book has clearly aged, it deserves its status as a classic.

Product Leadership: Creating And Launching Superior New Products
Product innovation is a high-risk war, the battles being fought both behind a company's doors and against the competition. But with all the effort companies exert to become product leaders, over a third of their new products still fail at launch, and many more never gain a profitable return. So what is it that product leaders like 3M, Merck, and Procter & Gamble know that allows them to continually lead the way with exceptional new products? In Product Leadership, Robert Cooper reveals the winners' secrets, and offers managers an invaluable resource to help implement and oversee systematic high-quality new product processes; develop new product strategies; manage product portfolios; determine which products to kill and which to back with resources; and foster ingenuity to outperform the competition. Showcasing examples from the winners, Cooper demonstrates that it takes a commitment from all managers, including marketing, finance, R & D, and HR to triumph over the competition and become a leader in the new products war.

The Trillion-dollar Enterprise : How The Alliance Revolution Will Transform Global Busines
Beyond the multinational corporation & mdash;even beyond the mega-corporation built from aggressive mergers and acquisitions & mdash;a new form of global business is emerging, and it is changing the competitive landscape forever. In his visionary book, The Trillion-Dollar Enterprise, Cyrus Freidheim offers a front-row seat to this seismic shift, through which a few dominant enterprises will control two-thirds of the global market in their respective industries. But they won & rsquo;t be corporations as we & rsquo;ve known them. They will be vast networks of corporate alliances & mdash;global coalitions of independent firms acting in concert as single entities, and combining assets that exceed the entire output of many nations.Drawing from fifteen years of groundbreaking research at Booz-Allen & Hamilton, Freidheim convincingly demonstrates that the rise of networks of this magnitude is natural and inevitable, as companies forego traditional & mdash;and riskier & mdash;methods of expansion in favor of alliances, joint ventures, and other collaborative arrangements that capture the best capabilities of the participants while avoiding the bureaucratic disadvantages of size. Already, we are witnessing the convergence in industries as diverse as telecommunications, aerospace, and commercial aviation into alliance networks, clustered around a few dominant players. For example, the global airline industry is coalescing around networks, led by United and Lufthansa in the Star Alliance and by American Airlines and British Airways in another. From the global stage, Freidheim takes up deep into the heart of & rdquo;Trillion-Dollar Enterprises & rdquo; in development, identifying the key elements of successful network formation, and outlining new roles and responsibilities for managers, executives, teams and boards. Freidheim ultimately calls for revolutionary changes in how business leaders should be educated and rewarded, as the skills of diplomacy and negotiation take priority over functional expertise. In his provocative conclusion, Freidheim takes us twenty-five years into the future to explore looming public issues as the forces of commercial globalization and political sovereignty collide, challenging existing paradigms of anti-trust, trade, and labor policies & mdash;and even national security.
The Unsold Mindset: Redefining What It Means To Sell
This Wall Street Journal bestseller is captivating readers of Adam Grant, Dan Pink, and James Clear and has been called "a lifechanging book as much about life as it is about selling."What if the greatest salespeople on the planet are the opposite of who you think they are?Everyone sells, every day. It's why the most successful people are so good at selling themselves, their ideas, or their products. Yet when people hear the word "sales" they think of some version of the overly confident, manipulative, "don't-take-no-for-an-answer" stereotype. Because of these misperceptions, when they find themselves in a situation where they need to sell, they feel compelled to put on the persona of a "good salesperson." But there's a disconnect between who we think good salespeople are and who they actually are. In any room, they're not the most self-confident, they're the most self-aware. They're not the most sociable, they're the most socially aware. And they don't succeed in spite of obstacles, they succeed because of obstacles.Colin Coggins & Garrett Brown sought out some of the most successful people from all walks of life, including CEOs, entrepreneurs, doctors, trial lawyers, professional athletes, agents, military leaders, artists, engineers, and countless others in between in hopes of understanding why they're so extraordinary. They found that as different as all these incredible people were, they all had an eerily similar approach to selling. It didn't matter if they were perceived as optimists or pessimists, logical or emotional, introverted or extraverted, jovial or stoic - they were all unsold on what it meant to sell and unsold on who people expected them to be.The Unsold Mindset reveals a counterintuitive approach to not just selling, but life. This book is not about "building rapport," "objection handling," or "trial closes." It's a journey toward an entirely new mindset & mdash; because the greatest sellers on the planet aren't successful because of what they do, they're successful because of what they think.Being a good person and a good salesperson aren't mutually exclusive. Igba-boi - Repositioning The Igbo Apprenticeship System
Igba-boi: Repositioning the Igbo Apprenticeship System highlights the entrepreneurial exploits of the Igbos of south-eastern Nigeria. Despite the globalisation-accentuated influence of western business culture, the Igbos have sustained their indigenous business system undergirded by an ingenious apprenticeship system, Igba-boi. This apprenticeship system has existed in the Igboland for decades as an important heritage, embedded in cultural norms and values passed down for generations. The authors argue that the unique framework and rules of operation of this viable socioeconomic empowerment model will, if well-positioned, make significant contributions to the advancement of the boi/Nwa-boi (apprentice), the Oga (Master), the community (Ndi-Igbo) and the achievement of the country & rsquo;s overall developmental goals.

The Mafia Manager : A Guide to the Corporate Machiavelli by V.
The world's oldest and best-organized conglomerate now reveals management techniques everyone can use. Unlike other guides to business, The Mafia Manager shuns theoretical verbiage to present the philosophy of leadership that founded and captained "The Silent Empire" through centuries of expansion and success. Some sample pearls of wisdom:-"Be sure you understand what your boss has ordered before you act on his command. What if you whack the wrong guy, or bomb the wrong joint...Learn the art of asking questions."-"Keep your friends close, but keep your enemies closer."-"Don't become involved in any office political battle without first asking yourself, 'What's in it for me?' and then 'What's in it for them?'"-"If you must lie, be brief."
Burn The Business Plan
How would you like to get business startup advice straight from the man who co-founded Global Entrepreneurship Week and StartUp America? Well now you can.
Carl Schramm, the man described by The Economist as 'The Evangelist of Entrepreneurship', has written a myth-busting guide packed with tools and techniques to help you get your big idea off the ground.
Carl believes that entrepreneurship has been completely misrepresented by the media, business books, university programmes and MBA courses. He believes that the perception of what it takes to start a business no longer matches the reality - which is bad news for everyone because it stops great ideas coming to life.
Burn the Business Plan punctures the myth of the cool, tech-savvy 20-something entrepreneur with nothing to lose and venture capital to burn, showing that most people who start businesses are juggling careers and mortgages just like you.
Burn the Business Plan is written to encourage you to get started. It demystifies the entrepreneurial process portrayed on television shows like Dragon's Den. It doesn't rely on largely irrelevant stories of overvalued tech startups, nor does it build on the largely mistaken narrative of a linear path from cold start to great success that is the essence of business planning, as taught in universities. This is the guide to starting and running a business that will actually work for the rest of us.
Burn the Business Plan is for regular people who just want practical, real-world advice on how to start and run a successful business. It shows you how to avoid the common mistakes and what you need to do to put your enterprise on track for success.

Time Traps: Proven Strategies For Swamped Salespeople
Sales quotas, stress-filled days, and long working hours fill the schedules of salespeople everywhere. In Time Traps, author Todd Duncan teaches readers that this formula is all wrong--and proclaims that it & rsquo;s possible to achieve more sales success with less stress, earn more family time with less frustration, and gain more money without investing life-consuming hours at work. The key, he shares, is not time management--after all, managing time is an impossible task to undertake. Instead, he shows readers how to manage what they do with the time they & rsquo;re given. Highly acclaimed by some of the biggest names in the business, sales, and leadership industries--including bestselling authors Stephen R. Covey and John C. Maxwell--Time Traps includes tips for balancing and maximizing time, saying no more often, leveraging time-saving tools and technology, and prioritizing life amid professional chaos. More than that, the book explains why these things are so important in the first place, and how allowing time for one thing can actually produce more output--not less--in other areas of your life. Research shows that as much as 75 percent of the time people spend at work is a waste of that valuable time--used for menial tasks rather than making sales. This straightforward and actionable guide will help you break out of this statistic, so you can propel your career--and your life--to new heights, starting right now.

Competitive Strategy - Techniques For Analyzing Industries And Competitors By Michael E. P
Competitive Strategy: Techniques for Analyzing Industries and Competitors by Michael E. Porter
Now nearing its sixtieth printing in English and translated into nineteen languages, Michael E. Porter's Competitive Strategy has transformed the theory, practice, and teaching of business strategy throughout the world.Electrifying in its simplicity & mdash;like all great breakthroughs & mdash;Porter & rsquo;s analysis of industries captures the complexity of industry competition in five underlying forces. Porter introduces one of the most powerful competitive tools yet developed: his three generic strategies & mdash;lowest cost, differentiation, and focus & mdash;which bring structure to the task of strategic positioning. He shows how competitive advantage can be defined in terms of relative cost and relative prices, thus linking it directly to profitability, and presents a whole new perspective on how profit is created and divided. In the almost two decades since publication, Porter's framework for predicting competitor behavior has transformed the way in which companies look at their rivals and has given rise to the new discipline of competitor assessment.More than a million managers in both large and small companies, investment analysts, consultants, students, and scholars throughout the world have internalized Porter's ideas and applied them to assess industries, understand competitors, and choose competitive positions. The ideas in the book address the underlying fundamentals of competition in a way that is independent of the specifics of the ways companies go about competing.Competitive Strategy has filled a void in management thinking. It provides an enduring foundation and grounding point on which all subsequent work can be built. By bringing a disciplined structure to the question of how firms achieve superior profitability, Porter & rsquo;s rich frameworks and deep insights comprise a sophisticated view of competition unsurpassed in the last quarter-century.

This book, full of actual examples, aims to bring to life all of the dynamic, subtlety, and variety of business strategy as it is practiced in the real world and in real companies. The author does not purport to be inventing strategy in this book or to be revealing the secrets of Japanese business and strategic planning. Rather, he is exploring with the reader the ways in which the strategist must think, the key principles and thought patterns that real-world strategists have used to move their companies forward in Japan and throughout the world. Built To Last: Successful Habits Of Visionary Companies
"This is not a book about charismatic visionary leaders. It is not about visionary product concepts or visionary products or visionary market insights. Nor is it about just having a corporate vision. This is a book about something far more important, enduring, and substantial. This is a book about visionary companies." So write Jim Collins and Jerry Porras in this groundbreaking book that shatters myths, provides new insights, and gives practical guidance to those who would like to build landmark companies that stand the test of time.Drawing upon a six-year research project at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business, Collins and Porras took eighteen truly exceptional and long-lasting companies -- they have an average age of nearly one hundred years and have outperformed the general stock market by a factor of fifteen since 1926 -- and studied each company in direct comparison to one of its top competitors. They examined the companies from their very beginnings to the present day -- as start-ups, as midsize companies, and as large corporations. Throughout, the authors asked: "What makes the truly exceptional companies different from other companies?"What separates General Electric, 3M, Merck, Wal-Mart, Hewlett-Packard, Walt Disney, and Philip Morris from their rivals? How, for example, did Procter & Gamble, which began life substantially behind rival Colgate, eventually prevail as the premier institution in its industry? How was Motorola able to move from a humble battery repair business into integrated circuits and cellular communications, while Zenith never became dominant in anything other than TVs? How did Boeing unseat McDonnell Douglas as the world's best commercial aircraft company -- what did Boeing have that McDonnell Douglas lacked?By answering such questions, Collins and Porras go beyond the incessant barrage of management buzzwords and fads of the day to discover timeless qualities that have consistently distinguished out-standing companies. They also provide inspiration to all executives and entrepreneurs by destroying the false but widely accepted idea that only charismatic visionary leaders can build visionary companies.Filled with hundreds of specific examples and organized into a coherent framework of practical concepts that can be applied by managers and entrepreneurs at all levels, Built to Last provides a master blueprint for building organizations that will prosper long into the twenty-first century and beyond
