The arrival of the D5100 appears to signal the completion of Nikons refresh of its non-pro DSLR lineup. Its feature set and pricing mean that it sits very comfortably between the beginner-friendly D3100 and the high-end D7000 - it's clearly aimed to attract the attention of enthusiast photographers without cannibalizing sales of is sister models. A camera maker can judge the success of its market positioning by seeing how many people are wondering 'which model is right for me?' on discussion forums - and we think a D3100/D5100/D7000 progression would minimize such doubts. The official line is that the D90 maintains its position in the range, but both its naming and overlap with other models suggest that its role is now more one of historical interest than future significance. The D5100 has a very similar 16.2MP CMOS sensor to the excellent one seen in the D7000 but, understandably, loses out on that camera's high-end build and feature-set. In early 2012, Nikon started a trend with the launch of the D800E, a full-frame digital SLR which did without a resolution-robbing optical low-pass filter in the quest for maximum resolution. That's a change which has since swept the industry, with OLPF-free cameras available at all levels -- professional, enthusiast, and even the entry-level. Now, Nikon follows up with the D810, a camera which shares much with its predecessor -- but there are some very important differences. Perhaps the most important of the bunch is one of strategy. The Nikon D800E's move away from a low-pass filter was a bold one at the time, and the company hedged its bets with the Nikon D800, a simultaneously-launched model that was near-identical, save for the inclusion of a low-pass filter. This time around, there is no such equivalent for the Nikon D810. With a refinement of the same 36.3-megapixel image sensor from the D800 and D800E, along with a next-generation EXPEED 4 image processor -- not to mention a market populated by photographers who now have a better handle on the moir & eacute; and false-color implications of foregoing that OLPF -- Nikon is clearly confident in the D810's ability to stand alone. So what's new in the Nikon D810? We've already mentioned that both image sensor and processor are new, but specifically, the Nikon D810's FX-format CMOS image sensor has improved microlenses for better light-gathering capabilities, yet is also said to have a lower base sensitivity of ISO 64 equivalent. Coupled with the new EXPEED 4 image processor, which is said to offer 30% greater performance and superior noise-reduction processing, the Nikon D810 bests its predecessors for sensitivity not only at the bottom end of the range, but also at the top. The standard range is now ISO 64 to 12,800 equivalents, expandable to encompass everything from ISO 32 to 51,200 equivalents. Nikon also promises even greater resolution from the newly-designed sensor than it managed with that in the D800E, perhaps because of the fact that it no longer needed to take into consideration an OLPF-equipped variant of the camera. And the new EXPEED 4 processor also allows a one frame per second improvement in burst performance across the board, to a maximum of five frames per second at full resolution, or 7 fps with a DX-format crop and the optional MB-D12 Multi Power Battery Pack attached. ADVERTISEMENT And there are other important differences in the Nikon D810's components. There's a new mirror sequencer / balancer unit, for example, that's designed to better-control vibration, and the rear-panel LCD monitor now has four dots per pixel, adding an extra white dot to the existing red, green and blue. That allows either a brighter, better-visible display when shooting outdoors, or power savings when shooting in lower ambient light. And the TTL pentaprism optical viewfinder has also been revisited, gaining a new prism coating for better clarity, along with an Organic LED status display panel that's brighter and easier to read. The body itself has also been redesigned, featuring a deeper, more comfortable grip and some minor tweaks to controls. And smaller improvements like these abound throughout: there's a new electronic first-curtain shutter function when shooting in live view or mirror lockup modes, for example. Nikon has also added a new highlight-weighted exposure metering option, as well as a new Picture Control called "Flat", aimed at those who want to color-grade and match output from multiple different cameras. There's even a space-saving, reduced-resolution raw format. Videographers get plenty of love, too, with lots of new features that will make the Nikon D810 an even more interesting proposition for video capture. (And Nikon is clearly banking on significant sales in this area, offering two specific product bundles aimed specifically at video shooters.) Changes include the ability to record video to the camera's own memory cards at the same time as outputting uncompressed HDMI for capture with an external device, and to use the Power Aperture function while recording to internal cards. There's also a new stereo built-in mic, a wind cut filter function, zebra stripes, and more. And those new highlight-weighted metering and flat Picture Control functions we mentioned previously? The D7000 was Nikon's most advanced camera at any price in 2010. Today the is the same thing in a bigger package with a larger sensor, and the is the same thing with a white finder LCD instead of green. If money matters, this D7000 is still your best buy in 2014. Yes, the and are more expensive, but also a lot more clumsy. The Nikon D7000 handles better than any of them, and has more resolution than the $6,500 D4s. Among the many things I love about the D7000, in addition to how much better and faster it handles than any other Nikon DSLR (and I also own a professional ), is that the pictures I make with the D7000 simply look better than what I've ever gotten with any other digital camera. The effects are subtle, but as a prolific photographer, I see that the colors are simply better, especially under difficult light under which my D3 just doesn't look as good. Unlike 2009's crappy , Nikon really did their homework these past couple of years on the D7000, and everything about it just works better than older cameras, technically, artistically and ergonomically. The D7000 certainly replaces the old , at a lower price for even higher technical and ergonomic performance. This reminds me of 2004 when the new, less expensive came out to replace 2002's . Just a year after the arrival of Nikon's full-frame in the fall of 2012, its replacement arrived in 2013. The D610 is the exact same as the D600 but with a new shutter mechanism that boosts continuous shooting and adds a 'Quiet Continuous' mode. The only other upgrade is an improved auto white balance system. The D600 is an excellent DSLR, with top-notch photo quality, a well-built body and impressive movie recording capabilities. Unfortunately for Nikon, the D600 is probably best known for - an issue for which Nikon only initially issued a service advisory, without admitting the actual cause of the problem. the issue over four months after the launch of the D610, saying: 'Nikon has thoroughly evaluated these reports and has determined that these spots are caused by dust particles which may become visible when the camera is used in certain circumstances'. It's now offering D600 users free inspection, cleaning and replacement of the shutter assembly and related parts even if the warranty has expired. Internet theorists have suggested the D610 was created to leave the troubles of the D600 behind. And the appearance of a new model so soon after the D600's launch, with almost no changes other than a new shutter mechanism, seems to give that theory some credence. However, given the company's reticence to discuss the problem with the D600, we haven't had absolute confirmation from Nikon that the oil issue has been 'officially' resolved. Some other things we enjoyed about the D600 that carries over to the D610 are its solid, weather-sealed magnesium alloy body, large optical viewfinder, responsive (and customizable) interface and high-end video specs. There is little to complain about in the D610 since from the reported oil issue seems to be fixed. Otherwise, just like the D600, we found fault with the D610's poor outdoor LCD visibility and some live view quirks (AF speeds and lack of a histogram). For example, when filming action scenes or motor racing,capturing objects moving at high speeds has always been a challenge for flying cameras using electronic shutters. The Phantom 4 Advanced uses a mechanicalshutter and a large-aperture prime lens. A mechanical shutter with a maximum speed of 1/2000s eliminates rolling shutter distortion which can occur when takingimages of fast moving subjects, or when flying at high speeds. The electronic shutter has also been improved with a maximum shutter speed of 1/8000s.A new Burst Mode is capable of shooting 14 fps at 20-megapixels, all for catching the perfect moment. 5 VISION SENSORS Equipped with DJI & rsquo;s FlightAutonomy system made up of five vision sensors, dual-band satellite positioning (GPS and GLONASS), ultrasonic rangefinders,and redundant sensors, the Phantom 4 Advanced can hover precisely in places without GPS and navigate complex environments. However, superior image recognition algorithms used by the Phantom 4 Advanced allow it to recognize and track an object while keeping it in frame. This new algorithm also recognizes a broad range of subjects, from people, vehicles, and animals, and will adjust its flight dynamics accordingly for smoother shots.Pilots can now choose between:Trace & ndash; Follow behind or in front of a subject, avoiding obstacles automatically.Profile & ndash; Fly alongside a subject at a variety of angles to get profile shots of the subject.Spotlight & ndash; Keep the camera trained on a subject while the aircraft flies almost anywhere. Fly in any direction visible on-screen with a simple tap. Tap anywhere on the screen to smoothly adjust the direction of flight while automatically avoiding obstacles *. Tap the screen again or use the control sticks to change direction. A new AR route function shows the aircraft & rsquo;s real-time flight direction for reference. It can be difficult to control altitude, course, speed, and camera pitch simultaneously using the control sticks. TapFly Free allows a pilot to set the direction of flight, allowing them to turn the Phantom 4 Advanced or tilt the gimbal as required without changing flight direction. In total, there are now two TapFly modes:TapFly Forward & ndash; Tap to fly in the selected direction.TapFly Free & ndash; Lock the forward direction of the Phantom without locking the camera direction allowing it to turn as it flies.*Obstacle Avoidance is not available with TapFly Free. In its Return to Home mode, the Phantom 4 Advanced can automatically choose the best route to return home depending on environmental conditions. It records its route as it flies, allowing it to return along the same route avoiding obstacles if the control signal is disconnected.Based on its altitude at the time of disconnection, the Phantom 4 Advanced is also able to adjust its flight path to avoid obstacles it has seen during the flight. At takeoff, the Phantom 4 Advanced records the scene below and will compare its recording with what it sees as it returns for a more precise landing. It can also detect the ground to see whether there is a suitable spot for landing. If any obstacles are found, or if there is water on the ground, it will alert the pilot and hover at an appropriate height, helping the aircraft land safely. Using Gesture Mode, selfies can be captured easily using a few gestures. Advanced computer vision technology allows the Phantom 4 Advanced to follow instructions through gestures. To take a picture in Gesture Mode, a person simply lifts their arms when facing the camera. The aircraft will recognize this movement by locking on to them, placing the person in the middle of the frame. When ready for a photo, the person holds their arms out to signal the aircraft. A three second countdown will begin, enough time to strike a pose. Now all these moments can be captured without a remote controller in sight. The Phantom 4 Advanced is able perform optimally in different situations depending on requirements. There are three main flight modes: Position, Sport and Atti. In P-Mode, TapFly, ActiveTrack, obstacle sensing, and GPS positioning are available. S-Mode adds extra agility and higher speed, reaching 45 mph (72 kph). The DJI GO 4 app shows battery life and calculates remaining flight time according to distance traveled and more.
