Overall, they feel good quality, reassuringly heavy (over 8kg each), and look smart and workmanlike.With a 6.5 & Prime; cone, they & rsquo;re appreciably smaller than the HS8s, and this might actually be the perfect size for DJ/producers, as we & rsquo;ll get on to. They are rear-ported (hole in the back to improve the bass), and are pretty standard as far as controls go: 1/4 & Prime; and XLR inputs, volume, on/off, and three-way attenuator switches for fine-tuning bass and treble (simply to suit where you & rsquo;ve placed them in your room). They & rsquo;re & ldquo;proper & rdquo;, sold separately, individual monitors, and don & rsquo;t function as a pair in any way, like some speakers aimed at the home studio. So no linking them together or wired remote controls here: you have a mono input per speaker (left output from DJ controller or mixer to left-hand speaker, right output to right-hand speaker) and turn them off/on and adjust their volumes totally separately. If you & rsquo;re new to all of this, this is how & ldquo;real & rdquo; studio monitors traditionally have worked, and how most still do, especially as you move up the price range where performance matters more than consumer-friendly features. IN USE I was lucky enough to use these over an extended period of time, as my speakers of choice when producing a . It was quite a good test for them, because while the Traktor Kontrol S8 is a DJ software controller first and foremost (and I played MP3s, WAVs and AACs through the Yamahas via that route, mainly EDM), it is also a standalone mixer, and I used it to play music from vinyl and CD, and non-EDM too. Clarity is good at all volume levels. For those with a more refined ear, they may not be as satisfying. Any audiophile will notice the difference compared to more expensive speakers. Build Quality The are built well but do not compare to some more expensive options. While rugged and offering a decent amount of heft they are not overbearing in weight. As always I recommend you treat your speakers with care. The materials used are decent but not high-end. That is to be expected at this price point. There have been reports that the left/right switch on the back can cause issues leading these monitors to eventually fail. Luckily it seems after sales support appears to be fairly solid. Either way when picking these be mindful that you & rsquo;ll likely need a new set of studio monitors in a couple of years. If you are on a budget these will do the job. For the longer term, you may need to invest in a new pair. Or at that point, you may be in a position to buy a longer lasting pair of studio monitors. Specifications The 3-inch woofer is well suited for a smaller studio or for near field listening. POWER Kali Audio defines a listening distance as the maximum distance at which the speakers can play continuously at 85 dB while maintaining 20 dB dynamic headroom. Not only do the IN-Series monitors accomplish this, but their coincident architecture allow them to be more accurate than other speakers in a wider variety of challenging acoustic environments. Even with purely digital material, producers can manipulate physical locations of elements in the mix, and you will hear these on a stereo recording. Not only does this allow producers to create interesting spatial effects, but it means that you can work faster and with more confidence. An accurate soundstage lets you & ldquo;see & rdquo; each element of the mix in front of you, so you can hear exactly what happens when you make changes. 2-way systems with good waveguides, like Kali & rsquo;s LP-6 and LP-8, do a good job at conveying this spatial information. However, because the tweeter and woofer on those speakers (and most studio monitors!) are separate, this information gets lost in the space immediately above and below the speaker. This means that at the listening position, you & rsquo;re not hearing the full stereo picture. The IN-Series solves this problem. The tweeter and midrange share an acoustic center, and the woofer is crossed over at a low-mid frequency, so the distance between the woofer and midrange is well under a quarter wavelength at the crossover point. This means that each IN-Series monitor is acoustically a point source. As such, it has the same excellent directivity that the LP-6 and LP-8 have at their sides in a full 360 degrees around the speaker. You & rsquo;re hearing all of the spatial information at the listening position, so the soundstage that you hear will have every detail that & rsquo;s present in the mix. Clarity The IN-Series monitors have very low distortion. This is the result of unburdening both the woofer and the tweeter, so that both are doing less work; the tweeter is only focused on high frequencies, and the woofer only has to worry about bass. Taking up the space in between in the hero of the IN-Series: the 4-Inch, profile-optimized midrange driver. This driver has a lot of work to do. In addition to reproducing midrange frequencies, it also acts as the waveguide for the tweeter. This means that the shape needed to be precisely engineered to provide an ideal dispersion characteristic for the tweeter. It also means that the midrange needs to stay still. In many other co-axial or concentric systems, high excursion from the larger driver causes intermodulation distortion, and degrades the accuracy of the system. The midrange on the IN-Series is limited to less than 1 millimeter peak-to-peak excursion, making it acoustically stationary while still providing midrange to keep up with the powerful woofer and tweeter.
