The USAF stressed extra power and maneuverability for their needs in an air superiority fighter aircraft. After many proposals, the selected design, F-15C Eagle, entered service in 1978. It has an exceptional record of 100 victories and no losses in air-to-air combat.The F-15C is powered by two F-100 engines, and can reach a top speed of Mach 2.5. The pilot can fly up to 9 g and still maintain control. It has an internal 20 mm M61 Vulcan cannon and a & ldquo;look down/shoot down & rdquo; radar system that can distinguish low flying aircraft from ground clutter. The F-15 has been sold to other countries worldwide and is still in service today. With continuing improvements, it is expected to still be around past 2025.

The Most Spectacular aircraft in the world today is, without doubt, the SR-71 Blackbird. Holder of the world absolute speed and altitude records, 2,193 miles per hour at 85,069 feet, the SR-71 is the most advanced strategic reconnaissance vehicle ever designed. The Blackbird is a product of the famous & ldquo;Skunk Work, & rdquo; Lockheed & rsquo;s Advanced Development Projects Group. The SR-71 design configuration is a modified, tailless delta with a blended forward wing called a chine. The Chine acts as a fixed canard to produce lift and decrease drag at cruising speed. The wing panels are noteworthy for their corrugated surfaces which not only add strength and stability on the wing, but help dissipate heat as well. The vertical stabilizers are all- moving surfaces which are two and a half times more effective than conventional rudders. At 0932hrs on 16th July 1969 the giant Saturn V rocket was launched from the launchpad at Cape Canaveral on the most important journey in the history of mankind. The giant Saturn V consisted of three main stages, was 110 meters (361 ft) high and weighed 3,000 tons. It could carry a payload of 50 tons and reach a speed of 11.2 km/second (25050 mph). The 394,000 km ( 244,800 mile) journey to the moon took 72 hours. After achieving low Earth Orbit, the upper assembly with the Apollo Capsule received a final push from the third stage rocket thrusters to achieve the speed required for its flight to the moon. Later the Apollo module broke away from the rocket, turned and pulled the Lunar Module from its protective covering. Coupled together like this, the combination eventually reached the Moon and entered Lunar orbit. After several Lunar orbits the Lunar Module with the astronauts N. Armstrong and E. Aldrin on board separated from the Command Module in which only the astronaut M. Collins remained. With two firings of the retro rockets the Lunar Module commenced its final approach into the Sea of Tranquility . This historic event will be remembered for eternity.
